Now, then, let’s get into some select new releases from FRIDAY, MAY 2nd, 2025, and let us know if we missed anything worth hearing!
::THE KNOWNS::
Blondshell ::IF YOU ASKED FOR A PICTURE:: Sabrina Mae Teitelbaum - aka Blondshell - put out one of my top 10 records in 2023 with her self-titled debut. Her music is pop-oriented alt-rock that’s catchy as fuck. Not hearing a shred of sophomore slump here.
Car Seat Headrest ::THE SCHOLARS:: This sounds more like a *band* record than a Will Toledo solo record with hired guns. Much more full and realized; which may be good or bad given what brought you to Car Seat Headrest in the first place.
Esther Rose ::WANT:: The follow-up to the critically acclaimed SAFE TO RUN (2023), WANT contains songs “ranging from stark solo performances to grungy blowouts…[but] maintains a steady focus while never staying too long in one place…she has made the most adventurous, hardest-hitting record of her career.”
Gringo Star ::SWEETHEARTS:: ATL readers probably already know, but for the uninitiated, Gringo Star are Atlanta’s torch-bearers of greazy, psychedelic garage rock.
Pink Floyd ::PINK FLOYD AT POMPEII - MCMLXXI:: So pissed that I missed this in the theatres last month. But we bought a Sonos surround sound system for the new house and I look forward to streaming the film - and this recording - on it.
Propaghandi ::AT PEACE:: “Smart music for dangerous times.”
PUP ::WHO WILL LOOK AFTER THE DOGS?:: The opening track of this record picks up where the fiercest Japandroids songs left off…
::THE NEWS::
Personality Cult ::DILATED:: Signed recently to Dirtnap Records (The Sleeveens), Personality Cult is the project of Wilmington, NC frontman Ben Carr. Here is how the label describes the band: “Fast propulsive punk with hooks for days, and dark undercurrents swirling underneath. While sonically this doesn’t fall too far from what you’d associate with many beloved Dirtnap bands of the past, these guys really nail the delicate balance of taking a familiar sound and putting their own unique spin on it, in the end sounding like nothing but themselves.”
Samantha Crain ::GUMSHOE:: Choctaw singer-songwriter from Oklahoma that writes, smart, gritty Americana songs. Crain might be your favorite songwriter’s favorite songwriter.
That’s it for this week!
