::THE KNOWNS::
Ben Kweller ::COVER THE MIRRORS:: One of my most anticipated records of the year and it does not disappoint. Written about the death of his son, Dorian, there’s a lot of somber themes on this record, but who better to tackle them than Ben Kweller. It’s also a jubilant ode to his late son. The record has a host of guests including Katie Crutchfield (Waxahatchee), Coconut Records, The Flaming Lips, and MJ Lenderman.
The Budos Band ::VII:: More NYC neo-soul from the DapTone records supergroup.
David Lowery ::FATHERS. SONS, AND BROTHERS:: A sprawling two-disc effort of minimalist songs that sound like David Lowery. Some fun Richmond easter eggs in the song titles to boot.
Illuminati Hotties ::NICKEL ON THE FOUNTAIN FLOOR [EP]:: On the heels of 2024s POWER, this EP behaves like a true “extended play’, continuing the themes and tones of its predecessor.
Matt Berninger ::GET SUNK:: The National nor Berninger have never been my thing, but I hope you love it anyway.
The Minus 5 ::OAR ON, PENELOPE!:: If Dad-Rock told Dad Jokes. The Minus 5 was tailor-made for most of the folks who read these roundups. I would love to see them tour with Cotton Mather.
Ty Segall ::POSSESSION:: Rock music for drugs.
Watchhouse ::RITUALS:: FKA Mandolin Orange, this NC-based folk duo has been said to have “redefined roots music for a younger generation.”
::THE NEWS::
CIVIC ::CHROME DIPPED:: A less-DIY effort from the Australian proto-punk band. Still fierce as fuck, tho.
